1902 END OF TERRACE HOUSE
Broadstairs
2020 - 2024 in phases
Our clients bought this Edwardian end-of-terrace house to become a holiday home by the sea for their extended family.
The phased works included the conservation of the main building, a rear wrap-around extension into the garden, and a small extension on the front of the roof, an exact replica of original rooflines further down the terrace, with stone coping, terracotta finials and pebbledash.
The soft red brick of the front and side elevations had been eroded by a century of salty winds, and then part covered in a cementitious slurry and modern masonry paint. We wanted to reveal the original brick, but tests showed that it was beyond repair, impossible to remove all the paint and slurry without causing significant damage. We took off all we could with a gentle poultice, and then washed over a silicate-based, vapour-permeable, dye solution from Keim, colour-matched to that of the bricks.
The new rear extension was formed of solid timber frame and boarding, lime-washed to soften the colour and also provide natural anti-fungal and anti-woodworm properties. The rhythm of sliding doors was matched to that of the timber frame, and long rooflights were placed over the top, together creating the feeling of being sheltered beneath a garden pergola.
