1920s HOUSE

Westbrook 2023

Our clients bought this seafront semi-detached house in 2021 and came to us for help to conserve the tired, former care home back into a generous and welcoming family home.

The building was part of an early 1900s suburban expansion of Margate along the coast over what was known as Westbrook Fields.

The works were phased to prioritise the conservation of the main building. While keeping true to the original pattern of rooms, minimal, surgical interventions were made to the layout to make a generous kitchen and allow views between rooms and right through from the seafront to the back garden.

Substantial thermal improvements were made to the fabric of the building using sustainable natural and lime-based systems. Heating and hot water is provided by an air-source heat pump in the garden.

Landscaping and planting the large front and back gardens will be the next phase work, setting the home in a low-maintenance green oasis suitable for the seafront location.

Planning permission has been granted for a further rear extension and for the reinstatement of traditional timber casement windows to replace the existing uPVC, to be carried out in later phases of work.  Care has been taken to minimise the cost implications of phasing works.
